Jose's coffee is very clean with flavors that fall into the comforting as well as complex categories. We find and overall pleasing cup that reminds us of cocoa nibs and a little bit of hazelnut along with flavors of green grape, and an acidity similar to kiwi.
We are so happy to be working with this amazing group of producers in Selguapa. What Antonio and the Ramirez family have been able to accomplish is truly remarkable. Just four years ago they were all selling in cherry for incredibly low prices and now have constructed a communal beneficio in Antonio's backyard where not only their family can process their coffee to sell as micro-lots but also surrounding farmers in the community. This group which started with two producers in 2018 now has 40 members processing their coffee to parchment who before would sell in cherry to local intermediaries. It's so encouraging to see such growth, and we cant wait to see where they go from here.
Here is a message from Jose, courtesy of our importing partners, Semilla:
“As a coffee grower, I began growing a small area of coffee in the year 2006, but since I had no other income and I could not keep the maintenance of the farm, I was forced to migrate to the United States, leaving my father in charge of my farm. It was until I was able to send money for the maintenance of the coffee plantation, that I was able to extend my farm.
After some years I was able to come back and began growing and taking care of it by myself, with the fortune that my family was already selling coffee as microlots, with the help of Rony Gamez. He has been supporting the growers of this zone in direct farmer importer relationship. So I decided to prepare my lot and classified and with the money I received I was able to buy more land which is what I'm growing.
I am very happy that for a third time I'm able to sell my coffee as a micro lot. I give a lot of thanks Brendan for supporting us. For choosing my coffee and for the price he has offered me because with this income, I am able to take better care of my farm and my family and my life is better.”

ABOUT WORKA SITE
Worka Site was established in 1990 by Ato Mijane Worassa. There are approximately 400 smallholder producers who deliver their cherry to this station. Ato's son Daniel has recently joined in managing the site, and has done a lot to help improve quality and consistency at the mill. The Mijane family has also started helping farmers with pre-harvest financing, and by providing organic compost/fertilizer. ABOUT ETHIOPIAN LANDRACE Ethiopia is widely acknowledged as where coffee originated, and its production continues to represent about 10% of the country’s gross domestic product. DNA testing has confirmed over 60 distinct varieties growing in Ethiopia, making it home to the most coffee biodiversity of any region in the world. Given the tradition of coffee production in Ethiopia and the political interworkings of the Ethiopian coffee trade, it is virtually impossible to get single variety coffee lots from Ethiopia. This is changing, albeit very slowly. Most Ethiopian coffees are blends of the many Ethiopian varieties, and referred to simply as 'Ethiopian Landrace'. |
